UHF RFID systems usually have a much larger reading range than HF, making this frequency the best choice for applications where an extended application is the most important factor. A typical UHF RFID tag can be read up to 10-15 meters or longer depending on the operating environment, but typical reading distance is 0.5 to 5-6 meters. Here, the size of the chip and antenna, as well as the reader's properties are important factors.

RFID tags using UHF can also transmit data faster than either LF or HF, allowing users to read far more codes per second. Reading distance is longer, and the reading speed is higher, but the signal is more likely to be affected by the environment and material due to the UHF's shorter wavelength.

UHF RFID tagging systems are commonly found in large warehouses, industry, and manufacturing plants where reading distance, speed, and efficiency are the most critical factors. Important to note is that the UHF requires special tags to be mounted on metal and works poorly in connection with water as water absorbs the radio signals (which are therefore not returned to the reader).
